Action Call to Save Traditional Marriage in Romania
By John Connolly
BUCHAREST, February 8, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-life citizens in Romania are calling for letters from the international community to encourage the Romanian legislature to adopt the definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
On February 4, the Romanian Senate's Judiciary Committee amended Article 1 (3) of the Romanian Family Code. The current Code says that family is "based on marriage between spouses." The new version will read that "The marriage between a man and a woman is the basis of the family." The amendment would leave no room for interpretation. The text added also states that the union between a man and a woman respects the Biblical requirements for marriage. The amendment, adopted unanimously by the committee, is projected to be approved in the Senate and will then be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for approval.
Following the drafting of the ammendment, however, homosexual advocacy groups have started a letter-writing campiagn urging Romanian officials to block the ammendment from going through.
"There is no excuse for playing politics with families' welfare," said Boris Dittrich, advocacy director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Program at Human Rights Watch. "These proposals not only deliberately discriminate against same-sex couples but threaten their families, including children. It is an insult to Romania's achievements elsewhere in overcoming discrimination."
Romania decriminalized homosexuality in 2001, and the number of abortions continue to exceed the number of live births in the country.
To write a letter encouraging Romanian officials to accept the definition of traditional marriage in parliament, readers should write to the President of the Romanian Senate and the President of the Chamber of Deputies.
